This issue presents Where The Flow Ends, an ongoing project by Mass Collective about water and how humans shape and alter its flow, set within the unique environment of the River Severn estuary.

Marking the boundary between England and Wales, the River Severn has seen nature and industry rise and fall over time. The project explores a place where raw and processed water flow against one another and poses the question of how we will choose to shape our future relationship with the river.

Severn Bridge, UK, 2023

The Severn Bridge disappearing in the morning fog, pictured from the Welsh side of the Estuary. This bridge was, until the construction of the Prince of Wales Bridge in 1996, the only way to cross the Severn by car South of Gloucester.

This image is part of Where The Flow Ends, a series documenting the Severn, the longest and most polluted river in the UK. Along its course, human life, industry and nature rise and fall over time, echoing the tides of the Bristol Channel.

Mass Journal 02

This issue presents Chime Ding Cast Tin, an ongoing project by Mass Collective documenting the last major bell foundry in Britain.

John Taylor & Co operates the largest bell foundry in the world in Loughborough since 1839. The photographs document the processes and the people involved, within a timeless industrial environment that will soon undergo substantial changes. These are the last days of the foundry as it’s been known since its foundation.

As you turn these pages you move through the process of the creation of a bell, from casting to tuning. The visual narrative is accompanied by the recordings of sounds, noises and voices of the people working at the foundry.

The Yard, so called from the fact that it was once an open courtyard, is the main working space at John Taylor Bell Foundry. For more than a century, old bells arrived here for restoration and newly produced ones left for more than 100 countries around the world. This photo is part of Chime Ding Cast Tin, a photographic project documenting the last major Bell Foundry in England and the people and skills involved in the craft of producing bells.

The Polycentric City

Mass Journal 01

This issue presents Londons, the first long term collective project conceived and curated by Mass Collective. Started from the desire to explore a common subject matter through a plurality of points of view, it documents the changing face of our city offering a snapshot of what is London in 2021.

Mass Collective invited a selected group of photographers to explore an area of their choice and bring their personal interpretation to it. The result is a collection of projects that stand out for their individuality but work as collective research into the changes that our city is undergoing.

This self-published zine has been produced to complement the work on show at the first Mass' Collective exhibition.

Among the many new developments rising along the River Lea there seems to be a fashion for coloured schemes. Just before the Lea ends its run into the Thames, the City Island neighbourhood stands out with its blue, red and yellow towers. A bit further north towards Stratford, Sugar House Island present similar multi-coloured blocks, this time following a more muted palette. At first glance, they look like cardboard movie sets, with the empty streets enhancing the cinematographic feel of the scenery. This photograph is part of the series Sugarcoated Island exploring the transformation of the Lea from an industrialised river to an attractive location for new and functional residential neighbourhoods.

Sasso Gordona, Switzerland / Italy, 2013

An early morning view from the top of Sasso Gordona, a mountain lying at the border between Ticino, Switzerland and Lombardia, Italy, two regions united by the same language and many cultural similarities. This photo is part of Nothing to Declare, a project exploring the Swiss-Italian political borderline, highlighting its ephemeral and abstract nature. It does so by juxtaposing images of the mountains – where the vegetation is slowly hiding checkpoints and barbed wire, and photos of urban areas – where border structures are still dividing the landscape.
