Nothing To Declare

by Luca Piffaretti

For people living in Ticino, Switzerland, and Lombardia, Italy, crossing the checkpoints that dot the territory to go to work, buy groceries or simply for a stroll, is part of the daily routine. Unlike many bordering territories around the world, the Swiss-Italian border divides two regions united by the same language and many cultural similarities.

This project aims to explore that political borderline, highlighting its ephemeral and abstract nature. It does so by juxtaposing images of the mountains - where the vegetation is slowly hiding checkpoints and barbed wire, and photos of urban areas - where border structures are still dividing the landscape.
