Simplon Pass, Switzerland, 2016
by Sue Barr

The photograph was taken on the Simplon Pass in Switzerland and is part of the series Architecture of Transit. The pictures explore the sublime beauty of both motorway architecture and the mountainous landscape they traverse. They capture the bridge's exquisite beauty and the concrete pilotti as they come into contact with the landscape. The bridge elegantly crosses a deep valley on its route to the top of the mountain, landscapes that inspired Turner, Ruskin and the Romantics who declared it the very epitome of the Sublime.
